Reducing the clicks

Hi everyone,
When we originally talked about the design of OpenVPMS we had in mind the cut back efficiency of text based Netvet with the richness of a mouse based, graphical interface. We said we wanted the best of both worlds. The netvet users amongst us were getting a modern product that did heaps more but we were going to sacrifice some speed and efficiency for it.

I think we have got a very speedy solution that indeed has added a rich graphical interface with good efficiency. But OpenVPMS never intended to be just "Good".

So I am hoping to collate a set of little workflow tweaks that might speed up some common processes. Ideally I want to cut the number of clicks and where possible make a click into a keystroke.

On their own that don't justify a project but together they could really speed up our product.

I'm not after major work flow changes, just little things in the current implementation that could be cutback or made more efficient.

I'll start the ball rolling but for those interested in reducing the clicks, start counting the clicks and think of ways to cut them out!
"Focus" just refers to where the cursor goes.

- A keyboard shortcut for "OK" in the confirmation dialogs. eg. Delete Visit confirmation.
- Being able to Tab in dialogs and having the focus remain in the dialog.
- When making a new appointment, having the contents of the Customer box selected so you can overwrite straight away rather then selecting or deleting. (Infact having this as default behaviour for any dialog where the focus goes to a text box).
- When adding an appointment, if the user uses the combination of Patient and Customer to find a Customer, both get entered in the New appointment dialog rather then having to enter the patient again.
- Having the "Search" buttons (the ones with binoculars) taken out of the tab order.
- In Schedule Views and Worklist Views, have a default Highlight option to prevent having to select it each time you log-in/out.

Just a start.

Cheers,
Matt C

Reducing the clicks

Hi Matt, taking your comments in order:

1 - A keyboard shortcut for "OK" in the confirmation dialogs. eg. Delete Visit confirmation.

Currently, the OK shortcut is disabled for all deletions and deactivations in order to help prevent accidental removals.

2 - Being able to Tab in dialogs and having the focus remain in the dialog.

This is a bug in the web framework we use (echo2). It has been correct in the echo3, but there is a fair bit of work involved in upgrading.

3 - When making a new appointment, having the contents of the Customer box selected so you can overwrite straight away rather then selecting or deleting. (Infact having this as default behaviour for any dialog where the focus goes to a text box).

Doable, but requires an extension to the echo web presentation layer.

4 - When adding an appointment, if the user uses the combination of Patient and Customer to find a Customer, both get entered in the New appointment dialog rather then having to enter the patient again.

Doable.

5 - Having the "Search" buttons (the ones with binoculars) taken out of the tab order.

Doable.

6 - In Schedule Views and Worklist Views, have a default Highlight option to prevent having to select it each time you log-in/out.

Doable, although would apply to all users. There is currently no facility for user preferences.

Reducing the Clicks

Cheers for the feedback Tim. It is sad but I find this streamlining exciting. I remember one OpenVPMS user telling me that they could assign an annual labour cost to each click in a competitors product... I have been mindful of it ever since :)

I'll keep thinking....

Any comments anyone?

Reducing clicks

Sandra @ Bellarine

Hi Matt,

I like  your points 1, 3, 4, 5, & 6  I have a question about the TAB IN DIALOG point 2. Do you mean when you are entering text and if you tab it doesn't go to the next field but stays in the box you are typing in. If so, then you would have to click to get out of the box?

Will have a bit of a brainstorm with users here and get some requests and will post soon.  A couple that immediately come to mind are

1. Being able to go next, next, next, instead of having to select, select, select would be great. This would be brilliant when working through product and client lists.

2.  New Invoice Box where it says 'select the type of invoice you want to create', can we set a default here, eg: automatically highlight invoice so an ENTER would accept it.

3.  Under Administration when you go to  Administration - templates - select, the box is not highlighted so you have to click in the box to start a search.  I often find myself automatically typing and then release I haven't clicked in the box to start. It would be good if the box was automatically highlighted

Will add more soon.

Sandra.

Reducing the Clicks

Hi Sandra,

I have created an active project here for the interim just to compile the suggestions as they come in.

In response to you suggestions:

1. Being able to go next, next, next, instead of having to select, select, select would be great. This would be brilliant when working through product and client lists.

Hmm. I know what you mean here. What if the previous search list was retained? So when you click "Select", the last list is just there and you dont have to search again? If the contents of the search box were also retained then you could edit them rather then retype also.

2.  New Invoice Box where it says 'select the type of invoice you want to create', can we set a default here, eg: automatically highlight invoice so an ENTER would accept it.

Agree

3.  Under Administration when you go to  Administration - templates - select, the box is not highlighted so you have to click in the box to start a search.  I often find myself automatically typing and then release I haven't clicked in the box to start. It would be good if the box was automatically highlighted

Yep

Re: Reducing the Clicks

Hi Sandra and Matt,I think the idea of a new style of workspace for areas where you are likely to do multiple current edits has been discussed.  The workspace would have a search filter  and a table and you could select and edit from the displayed table.   Think this would work well for lookups, types, organisation, tmplates ?, users, product information workspaces etc. Agree with New selection dialogue.  Can make changes to order of entries I believe but using standard selection list don't think can currently auto highlight.  Tim maybe able to elaborate ..With templates the search is currently initiated automatically once the search dialogue is displayed so the focus is on the first entry in the list.  We can definitely turn off automatic search which will mean focus will be in name field ? Reducing the Clicks 1 (Developer Update)

Hi everyone,

Now this project is comprised of a number of JIRA's or developer tasks. Several have been reviewed and costed.

When you pledge (as I am sure there will be a torrent of $ flowing for these ones ), just make sure you specify which JIRA number you are giving money for.

The list is as follows (this list can also be found here www.openvpms.org/project/minor-tweaks-1)

JIRA 965 $250 "Invoice" is default in New Charges dialog

When creating charges in the Customer Charges workspace a dialog pops up titled "New Invoice" and lists 3 options, "Counter Sale", "Credit" and "Invoice".
This should default to "Invoice" and be selectable with Enter key.

A great side effect of this change is that we will be able to use arrow keys in similiar "New" selection boxes.

JIRA 964 $250 Customer & patient fields are filled from a Customer search

Presently, an appointment's customer and patient fields must be input separately.
However, the customer browser can be used to query customers by name, contact and/or patient.
In the case where the patient was used to query the customer, appointment editing can be simplified by populating the patient field automatically.

JIRA 963 $250 Choose the default Highlight option in Schedules and Worklist Views

In Schedule Views and Worklist Views, have a default Highlight option to prevent having to select it each time you log-in/out.

Cheers all,

Matt C

Reducing the Clicks 1 (Developer Update)

Hi everyone,

Please note

JIRA 964 $250 Customer & patient fields are filled from a Customer search

Has been updated to be $330 so that the newly selected patient will be present not only in the new appointment box but also the Patient workspace.

Cheers,

Matt C

Reducing the Clicks 1 (Developer Update - another one!)

This "Reducing the Click" feature has been added to the list. It seeks to streamline the opening of a search dialog without using a mouse and also prevents the TAB button from having to move through the binocular buttons.

JIRA 967 $250 Pressing enter in an empty field launches a search dialog.

This should function the same way as if the search button (i.e the one with binoculars) had been pressed.
The search button (little button with binoculars) will also be removed from thetaken out of the tab order (ie. The order of boxes that you move to if you press the "TAB" button).

This is very important for those of us who like to do as much as possible with keystrokes.

Cheers,

Matt C

Reducing clicks

Hi Matt,

I don't get what you mean by Jira 967, I understand that the binoculars will no longer be included in the TAB order, but if I type a partial name in the client field in the appt add area and enter I get a search already.  I'm obviously missing something?

Jira's 963, 964 and 965 could we please pledge 10% to each of these.

Sandra.

Re: Reducing clicks

Thanks Sandra, Jira 967 allows you to open an empty search by pressing enter with an empty box. Currently the only way to do that is by clicking on the Binoculars. Currently if you press enter, nothing happens. An empty search is important if you don't know the first letter of someone's name or want to search a contact not a name etc etc. It is needed cos otherwise people who are used to Tab-ing onto the binoculars and pressing enter top start a blank search will be disadvantaged by he removal from the Tab order.
