setting custom values for a derived field during an Kettle Import

I am considering my options on setting a custom value for a import on act.patientMedications for the description field which is typically derived.  

Ie I would create a custom product such as "Imported Medication" which would link to all.  then set the description field manually to include the details of the actuall meds

I am merging an acquired clinic - hence  not importing products and the names for meds are all different between the 2 clinics anyway...so I need a way of doing this without importing a product list

I just want to check if I set a value for a normally derived field it wont get overwritten by the derived value.

At present, derived fields are evaluated whenever an object is displayed, so even if you set the field, it will be updated in the UI.

I think it will be easier to import all of the other practice's products and mark them inactive. That way any patient history and transactions have got some meaningful product data to link to.
