If you are installing MySQL on a Windows 8 system, then although the readme & install instructions say that MySQL 5.1 will work, its installer appears to have problems with Win 8.

In contrast the 5.5 installer works happily (as does MySQL 5.5). Download it from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/installer/5.5.html
