Storing attachments and docs

Just a quick question : when you put an attachment on a patient file eg microscope image or scanned doc; is it actually physically attached to the file or is it a query to locate the attachment at another site?

I guess my main question is whether you can delete an image from the main directory folder where it has been uploaded once it is attached to Open VPMS or will Open VPMS then not be able to find it?

Re: Storing attachments and docs

Hi Amanda,

All images, attachments, letters etc are directly stored in the database in a compressed format so you do not need to keep the original copy of the file you uploaded.

We did this for data integrity and performance issues because as you are aware if it is stored in the filesystem it is easy to loose the link to the document forever with a simple name change or filesystem corruption and practices with large numbers of attachments in a single folder experience significant speed issues when trying to access them.

Cheers Tony

Re: Storing attachments and docs

Because I am not sure how you can get copies of images etc out of the VPMS database, I have found that for ease of access, it is worth keeping a seperate folder in which you can readily access these images.

We download images or scans to a download files( Photos, Microscope images, rad etc) , attach what we want to the patient files and move any others or copies to either "clinical examples" or whatever files.

Getting images out of Open VPMS

Hi MRR,

Do you mean you want to get the image/attachment out of OpenVPMS when looking at it in a customer/patient (as part of a clinical interaction) or do you mean you would like to see all the attachments/images stored in the database (for a more general review or seeing examples of images for use in a  talk for example)?

I think if an image is of special interest then storing it seperately is not a bad idea. I attach images of interest to a patient under my own customer file called "Interesting Images". This way I know it is properly backed up and I can access the images anywhere I can access OpenVPMS. Very handy at times when I want to show a client an example of something.

Hi MC, Yes it sounds like we both do the same. I attach images ( rads, microscope, lesions, videos etc) to the client record and good examples of various things I keep as a copy in a "Clinical Examples" file.

My query was really: once that image is attached to the patients record how is it possible to get a copy out again ie to perhaps send to specialist? or to maybe copy elsewhere?

Re: Getting images out of Open VPMS

Hey there MRR,

You sure can. Open the image. Depending on ur browser it should open in a new window. Right Click somewhere on the image and select "Save Image As" or "Send Image" (pending on ur browser and ur operating system). Ctl-P will open a print window also (a tip if u want to print a HTML attachment).
